I agree that the error should not display in the normal field, and about a single text box being slightly too minimalistic. How about solving both problems at once by having an input field and underneath a "result" label. On first launch, the result label could display something like "Enter a calculation above (eg "2+3")". The result label could update itself on text change rather than on return, in the true spirit of BeOS instant-responsiveness. Also when scrolling through previous calculations, this would enable the user to see the result - often it's the result I remember rather than the exact calculation.
