Hi Alex,
thank you for your interest in helping Haiku!

refuse to drop down to assembly unless I absolute must.

Hehe, nobody will force you to do ugly assembly tasks...unless you
wish otherwise. :)

My skills and time are at the services of Haiku, I would like to get
my feet wet in programming for Haiku. Not sure where my skills can be
best used. I do have a strong technical background.

Since you specifically refer to your technical background, what is
this "technical background" exactly (kernel, drivers, network
protocols, media, ...)? This could help with finding nice tasks for
you.

Do you have any experience with the BeOS API?

Please take a look at our teams: http://haiku-os.org/about/teams
Which area interests you the most?

Currently, our network support still needs much work. The kernel needs
a lot of improvements (better algorithms). Drivers are always a hot
topic. Most kits need lots of bug fixes and maybe still miss a few
minor features. You might want to join a team's mailing list and ask
where help is needed.

Writing an application might also be a nice introduction to our
Interface Kit. For example, we still need an easy to use partition
manager (the backend API is mostly finished, so it would be more UI
work, I think). We also don't yet have a .pkg-compatible installer.

Feel free to ask more questions about specific teams. I'm sure we can
find something interesting for you. ;)

Bye,
Waldemar Kornewald
