Axel, would using the BootX that is part of the XPostFacto project an option? That seems to emulate a New World situation on a Old World machine (certainly, if I look at XpostFacto in verbose/text mode booting Panther on my Wallstreet 2 powerbook, it mentions "starting New World emulation" or words to that effect.
XPostFacto seems to be open source too. I'm pretty sure BootX is, and isn't necessarily part of XPostFacto anyway. BootX seems to be used to specify the boot device and then goes on from there.
