[openbeos] Re: Anybody want some Be books?

Porting Unix Applications isn't available in PDF that I know of. It was
published by Morgan Kaufmann Publishers (www.mkp.com), and their website
doesn't mention anything about books available in electronic form (it didn't
even seem to recognize the book). Also, the book says "Supports BeOS
Release 3", so a lot of the BeOS-specific info in it is a bit dated (IIRC Be
did some fairly significant UI changes).

It does contain a lot of general porting information, including the areas of
how BeOS and Unix/Linux differ and some ways to make sure code is portable.
Considering the good general information that I've learned from reading
through it, I hope that eventually a Haiku version of this book is written
(online, printed, or otherwise).

Since this is already fairly OT, I'll try to bring it back around :) All
three of the mentioned books were excellent texts when they were published
but now suffer a bit from age. Considering the power and ease of online or
wiki-based publishing, I think someone(s) would be doing the community a
great service to begin an online Haiku library where a team of Haiku writers
and developers can put together a fresh version of these books (in a
kept-up-to-date form). My programming experience has been in two operating
systems (BeOS and QNX), and I got into both of the OSes because of a book
(in this case, "Programming the BeOS", now available in PDF IIRC). Books
make the job of learning much easier for a lot of people that just reading
API documentation and random bits of sample code, and the availability of
such e-books (especially one on porting) would make Haiku even more
attractive to developers. (I've wanted to begin writing some stuff on UI
programming for a while, but I currently don't have a machine that can boot
Be/Haiku).

Anyway, that was kind of off-topic, but I've had that idea for a while, and
that last email reminded me of it again so I figured I'd throw it out
there. Back to lurking mode...

Well.. id like to read "BeOS: Porting Unix Applications", but im not
working in Haiku so i dont deserve to have the book.
In the future, id like to join Haiku Team, because im a C++ programmer
and student of Computer Science. I've made little native apps in Beos
and simple ports (just ./configure, make and little tweaks) but i
want to read more about ports.

Maybe i can get the book in PDF ...

Thanks!
