To be fair to the author, it seems he wrote the article for the
November 2008 issue of the magazine, which means he likely had to do
his experiment sometime in September or earlier :)
The pre-alpha images didn't become publicly available until mid-November.
So, yes - first impression would likely be much better now using a
pre-alpha image instead.
