This is a good move. In fact, this is what I am using for the User 
Guide site.

For consistency purposes I think it would be much better to stay with 
the standard layout where the blocks are to the right of the body. Not 
sure what you mean by "it sort of dissapeared", but putting the book 
block to the right should definitely work. What exactly happens?
