[haiku-web] Upcoming: Migration of dev.haiku-os.org

Hello all,

I'd like to inform you on a few changes that will be happening to the
Trac and the Mercurial services.

Some history. We used to have dev.haiku-os.org hosted on a webfaction
account. After multiple run-ins with Webfaction, and their bad
performance during peak hours, we decided to move

For the past nine months, dev.haiku-os.org was hosted through a
connection of Scott (from unixheads.org) Scott offered this host for
no charge. The good thing was that we had our own virtual OS and that
provided a welcome flexibility. So far performance and reliability
have been super (except in the beginning when I misconfigured the
server).

Unfortunately, due to organizational changes the server we are
currently running on will be disconnected from the network. I have
been working with the server owner and Scott in preparing a move to a
new server, however, the network gods suddenly decided that it was
over for our beloved server. This led to an outage this afternoon
which some of you might have noticed. The server owner fortunately
managed to buy some time until next Monday.

This means that a move suddenly has been fast-tracked. The conclusion
is that THIS SUNDAY dev.haiku-os.org will go OFFLINE. This gives us
enough time to copy, back up and verify the data.

What happens then depends on several factors. The issue is that the
projected new server is not ready yet. Scott is looking into preparing
that server, or another one, but he is, like us, a volunteer so it
might not be ready on Sunday.

So the plan is this: if Scott is able to give an estimation on the
date the new server is ready before Sunday, the services will remain
offline until the new server is set up (given that the ready date is
within an acceptable time frame).

However, if there is no ETA for whatever reason, I will restore
dev.haiku-os.org on Webfaction until the new server is ready.

Please note that I will send a final announcement to all mailing lists
when the exact plan is known.

Kind regards,

Niels Sascha Reedijk
