If the Drupal 5 module has any advantages over the script, then I
suppose there would be value in switching. But since we don't know
exactly when we will (be able to) migrate to Drupal 5, I think we should
focus on our more immediate need, which is to replace Gallery 2. For
that, the combination of Picasa with your script seems to do the job
nicely.

Has the picasaweb.css file also changed or only the PHP file?
