I must say that I disagree with this. We should be posting, at least some,
community stuff to encourage these things to continue. It's tough for people
to get involved and help out (referring to side projects and initiatives
here) without getting some sort of recognition from the main project.

I really don't think this would be the case but maybe I'm wrong. A community
focused sub-site/sub-domain, at least IMHO, would promote community
involvement and give people a sense of participation that goes above and
beyond the forums and mailing lists.
