The following news categories exist:
Community
Development
Events
Help needed
International
Marketing
People
In principle, these broad-based categories were meant to cover stuff that
happens inside the Haiku project and/or community, and that is the focus
of the website.
That being said, IMHO it is OK to publish third party developments, but
only when they are newsworthy enough, that is, they have a significant
impact on Haiku itself from the POV of development, community, etc. For
example, if/when the wifi bounty (which is a third party project) results
in working code, or when the code is integrated into the Haiku tree, that
IMO would warrant a news post on the Haiku website (because of its
significance). Or if Gobe returns, as Humdinger mentioned. ;)
With regards to front page visibility, it can be used not only for news,
but for any posts, including blog posts, documents, forums and
conferences. Regardless of the post type, the criteria is that there is
enough value in the post that it deserves the extra visibility. For
example, a new document that can benefit many people is worth promoting to
the front page; a blog post from an GSoC/HCD student reaching a major
milestone would also be newsworthy enough for the front page. For
instance, one could also enter the next BG info into a conference post,
and promote it to the front page (killing two birds with one stone: front
page annoucement and addition to the event calendar/list/map).
All the IMHO and FWIW disclaimers apply.

Jorge
