Spam account are quite pervasive; I have been blocking 5-10 spam
accounts per day for the last several months. The situation would be
even worse were it not for the Mollom module that Urias added to the
site; this filter blocks approximately 50 spam accounts a day, the all
time record for a day being 3152 blocked accounts (on July 18).

So, yeah, it's an ugly world out there, and we are doing a pretty good
job to keep the website clean in spite of it.
