I keep my desktop extremely sparse. This idea came about when I was really
big into custom wallpapers. My current desktop has only the boot drive, my
home folder, a link to my development folder and the trash. Since all these
icons are custom I don't need to see the text. I guess I feel it clutters
it up. The only change to this I would make is to add tool tips for when
multiple files have similar icons. Your question is why I set it default to
true. That way it is only there if someone wants it.
PS One other patch I have is also a superficial change to Deskbar. It adds
what I call an end cap to the running apps list. It was my fist attempt at
hacking deskbar. I was hoping to expand it into a shelf for replicants, but
I know that Haiku is heading down a different road so I've held off.

While the patch itself looks good (only a minor coding style issue in
line 151/152), and you've found the right places for your changes
(which isn't always that simple in Tracker), I don't quite understand
the purpose of this patch, to be honest.
Why would anyone ever want to remove the text from all icons on his
desktop (or you in this case :-))?

No, it's fine to post them here.
Bye,
Axel.
