A couple people recently in #haiku have been having problems with the
newer gcc 4.3.x compiling our cross tools. It seems an issue in the
gas code is the holdup.
I don't have much time this morning as I'm leaving in a few minutes,
but I wanted to point you to a (non-english) blog someone put together
explaining how they were able to compile the tools:

We should probably investigate this, as more people with newer linux
distros are gonna start running into this now.
