I don't have much time this morning as I'm leaving in a few minutes, but I wanted to point you to a (non-english) blog someone put togetherexplaining how they were able to compile the tools: http://matias.archlinux-br.org/archives/63I'm the owner of this blog. Let me explain in English what I'm saying there.GCC 4.3.x generates a (perhaps meaningless) warning when building gas. But, by default, warnings are being treated as errors, and building fails.
Thanks for the quick info. Unfortunately I failed to see the offending warning message in your blog - without it, it's hard to judge whether it's meaningless or not. :)
Could you try compiling with LC_ALL=C set as environment variable so that you can post the offending warning message in English? Maybe Michael or someone can verify then.
A better solution than working around GCC 4.1.2 issues might be to upgrade our copy to 4.3.x, hopefully resolving also the current gcc4 optimization fixes, but I have no idea how much work that would be. Given the pace towards a gcc2-based Alpha 1, it's probably of low priority currently.
