GCC 4.3.x generates a (perhaps meaningless) warning when building gas.
But, by default, warnings are being treated as errors, and building
fails.


Thanks for the quick info. Unfortunately I failed to see the offending warning message in your blog - without it, it's hard to judge whether it's meaningless or not. :)

Could you try compiling with LC_ALL=C set as environment variable so that you can post the offending warning message in English? Maybe Michael or someone can verify then.

A better solution than working around GCC 4.1.2 issues might be to upgrade our copy to 4.3.x, hopefully resolving also the current gcc4 optimization fixes, but I have no idea how much work that would be. Given the pace towards a gcc2-based Alpha 1, it's probably of low priority currently.
