If you feel that the features is ready for wider testing it's probably
a good idea to merge into master so that it can be included in the
nightly builds. Like you said you need to activate the fstrim command
to enable trim support on a volume so it's not as if the changes will
regress what already works.

(Sorry I don't have a spare SSD to test)
