1) We need to know all the information: language coverage of our current
DejaVu + VlGothic solution, language coverage of Noto in different
setups.

I compared Noto and DejaVu (the CJK comparison with VLGothic is better
done by someone able to read a CJK language...).
Superficially only, I'm afraid, I just put two CharacterMap windows
side by side, scrolled down and noted the differences.
Here are my notes, whatever it's worth... (Took me long enough, so I
can post it here just as well. :) )

1. Missing from Noto (compared with DejaVu):

Armenian
Hebrew
Arabic
N'Ko
Lao
Georgian
Unified Canadian Aboriginal syllabics
Ogham
Supplemental arrows A
Braille patterns
Supplemental arrows B
Miscellaneous mathematical symbols B
Georgian supplement
Tifinagh
Yijing hexagram symbols
Arabic presentation forms A
Arabic presentation forms B
Old italic
Tai Xuan Jing symbils
Mathematical alphanumeric symbols
Domino tiles

2. More complete in DejaVu:

Combining diatrical marks for symbols
Letterlike symbols
Number forms
Arrows
Mathematical operators
Miscellaneous technical
Miscellaneous symbols
Dingbats
Miscellaneous symbols A
Supplemental mathematical operators
Miscellaneous symbols and arrows
Latin extended C
Supplement puntuation
Modifier tone letters
Latin extended D
Alphabetic presentation forms

3. One font has characters the other has not  (Noto <->DejaVu):

General punctuation

4. More complete in Noto (compared with DejaVu):

Phonetic extensions
Phonetic extensions supplement
Combining diatrical marks supplement
Superscript and subscripts
Specials

------

In general I like Noto better now - have been using it for about a
month now - but what sucks a bit is the missing characters in the
"symbol" blocks. Is that disqualifying? I dunno...

2) We need the visual comparison, and maybe test it a little in daily
usage.
3) Only if we can't reach an argument to one or the other solution, a
vote should be started.

For 2) we should also first implement the subpixel-positioning for our font
rendering (i.e. precise positioning even when not using subpixel-rendering).
It could make quite a difference. I'm still interested in doing this,
although have little time lately and so I don't know yet when I get to it,
could be some more weeks... (so if anyone else wants to do it and has more
time currently, go ahead!)

You're in luck, Julian, nobody stepped up for that yet. :)

Humdinger
