Diver has updated the recipe of freetype to v2.7.
The main difference is the updated TrueType interpreter from v35 to
v40. Please see the main dev Nikolaus Waxweiler's mail for the
interesting details [1]. From his opening paragraph:
"FreeType 2.7.0 will ship the new v40 TrueType instructions
interpreter version enabled by default. It finally brings
DirectWrite/ClearType-like rendering to the screen, or "subpixel
hinting" as some FreeType code calls it. Actually, there is no
subpixel hinting. Read on."
I have built an image using freetype 2.7.0 and had a quick look around.
I've an archive of a few PNGs old/new in my dropbox. [2] It's best to
see the differences by unpacking in a folder and browse thru them with
ShowImage.
I hope I did everthing right. I had to fake the 2.7 packages by
renaming them to the old 2.6.5, because jam would otherwise keep
downloading the old freetype packages...
In the meantime, PulkoMandy gave a hint on IRC on that:
"[15:36:09] <PulkoMandy> for testing of the new freetype package
before making it official: you can't do it without uploading the
package to the servers, but there is a "build-remote-test-repository"
target in jam for doing that without pushing the changes (see "jam -q
help" for more info on our targets)."
What's everyone's opinion, should we update freetype or not?
