If the stage2 boot loader doesn't even run, serial output won't help,
anyway. But often, desktop mainboards still have an internal serial
output that can be enabled with the right plug.

I guess the partitions aren't beyond some of the usual show stoppers
(ie. 8 or 128 GB or something)?
Maybe you found a BIOS that has still problems with that :-)

You could also follow Ingo's advice and see if the partition offset is
correct. You might even want to check what data the stage1 loader
actually loads instead of the disk's super block.
You could also try to run Qemu off of your hard drive (ie. qemu -
snapshot /dev/sda), and see if you can reproduce the problem.
If you don't manage to get it to run at all, do yourself a favor and
use VMware instead of Qemu - it's much faster ;-)
Or bring the system with you to the next BeGeistert...

Bye,
   Axel.
