I had started to write some app_server benchmarks, but didn't get around
making them nice to use until now. The things I found out is that BeOS/ZETA
was faster in many ways, but Haiku was not far behind, especially
considering it produces better quality in some respects (for example
anti-aliased lines, or subpixel-anti-aliased text with 256 levels versus 16
levels of anti-aliasing for the BeOS text rendering). Haiku's app_server
performance did degrade a lot worse when there was a lot of clipping, while
the BeOS app_server was unimpressed.
It would be nice to make a more conclusive benchmarking tool that covers a
lot more aspects and neatly compiled the results for comparison.
