Hi Axel,

Out of curiosity: why not just use UTF-8 and be done with it?

Because UTF-8 encoded email is not that widespread in Japan yet, so it is always safer to use ISO-2022-JP. If I am not mistaken,

In conclusion: if moving the drop-down menu out of sight solves some sort of problem, then I suppose the user could live with the move at the cost of some extra inconvenience. But if it's just being moved for cosmetic reasons, then I would be for keeping the menu where it is.

It's a bit of both - the "from" field is usually not visible completely because of the encoding menu. And since the encoding/decoding isn't really that useful for the general user, it would be a good candidate to make more room for the "from" field which everyone uses.

Ah, I see. Yes, it can be kind of visually awkward in some situations.

Besides that, it could always be made an option, too, if enough interest is there.

Hmmm... I am thinking that having an option that modifies the interface would add complexity to documenting the application. Being that the change would result in a relatively minor inconvenience to a relatively small group of users, and in the spirit of keeping things simple, I put my vote to moving the encoding selection to a menu as suggested by Humdinger. I suppose the Message menu would be the logical place for this?

Cheers,

Jorge/aka Koki
