You're maybe not using the safe mode properly - if you get to the
"safe mode video" menu and select a video resolution, you're in the
wrong spot.

FWIW, removing the driver is as easy as booting to the safe mode
console and using:
It's been my understanding that you need to both enable the safe mode video, and choose the resolution that you want, and that's what I've been doing. That doesn't seem wrong to me, but it might be. I might be able to remove the driver if my monitor doesn't time out and go to sleep on me because of the incorrect refresh rate or resolution...
