 ... because at some point I'm going to have to update that partition
to a new rev, and I'd better find out what the problem is before I do! (:-/)

The thing is I'm still having difficulty tracing my way through
all the components involved.  There doesn't seem to be a guidebook. (:-))

In particular, where in heck *is* the volume-control replicant, and
where is it keeping its state?  There must be some conflict somewhere,
but I can't seem to even locate the basics.

[And is anybody going to try to determine why OSS only works about 5%
of the time...?]
