[Sorry about my rather slow responses, but each point seems to take
a lot of investigation... (:-/]

It's definitely not hda. I didn't think it was because it's been
happily coexisting with OSS for all the other revs. I removed it
from its bin directory anyway, and the lockup still happens.

I finally tracked it down to the 'oss' in ...config/add-ons/kernel/media.
The one from the compile I did locks everything up; the one from (much)
earlier doesn't -- and actually provides sound on rare occasions.

But I'm still totally baffled by the problem that started all this.
When I installed rev 30629, the volume control slider became inactive
(and all red). This is still the case. However, on the other partition
where I installed the same rev (and the working OSS versions) there is
no problem -- the slider is normal and effective (and as I said,
occasionally it even plays sound!).

Now there is *no* difference between the system directories on the two
partitions. I did a diff -r on them to make sure. So I concluded that
whatever is blocking the volume slider must be in the settings somewhere.
But I moved out *all* the old settings (except beos_mime) and it *still*
is dead (and red)! (Multiple precautionary reboots involved, of course.)

On the new partition, I actually had an old-style (but working) slider
until I cleaned out the settings there as well. Now it is new-style
(with a dB label) and still working.

Where do I look next?
