This is expected behavior when in spatial mode (the default). If you
want to open the desktop folder in a window, you need to switch
Tracker into single window mode.

This is related to the missing icons issue and has been fixed.

Hit ctrl+alt+delete and you will get a dialog box that among other
things has a "Restart the  Desktop" button when either Deskbar or
Tracker aren't running. Otherwise, if you have an open Terminal,
/system/Tracker & would work.
