[haiku-development] Sound of Silence...

Hi,
I'm hoping someone once again can steer me in the right direction...

When Scott gave me this machine (ThinkPad 570E) it was playing audio
(I gather it had just learned to do so). I'm now running on a newer
release, and there's no sign of any sound.

If I reboot to the earlier partition -- release 29462 -- I get audio
again... usually! I think I'm actually encountering two problems.
It looks as if there's a buffer-flow problem or something in this
release that often prevents it playing when first booted. If I try
a little later it usually works, but is very sensitive to other activity
such as mouse-movement.

However, it's something different in the later release -- 30629.
There seems to be no sound driver at all. In the 29462 Media Preferences,
audio I/O is connected to "Crystal CS4280", but in the later one my only
choice is "<none>".

Digging around a bit, it appears that this device is handled by OSS
but all the OSS stuff seems to be in "/boot/home/config/..." in the
old system, and is not present at all in the current one. I've tried
linking across to what I could find, but it made no difference, so I'd
guess I'm missing something -- like a proper install.

So what's the status on all this? I saw something about a conflict
between OSS and "HDA". So what the heck is HDA anyway? I haven't
been able to track down any references.

Pointers appreciated.
                        -- Pete --
