bazaar 2.0. fix this performance issues and is slightly faster then hg now.

possible to stay with SVN, but still use hg or git (or bzr) over some
kind of bridge like hg-git, I wouldn't mind that either.

There is a svn foreign branch feature in bzr which seem to do this, but I got an error when checking out the trunk with my haiku developer name. Maybe I just did something wrong?
