Same here... unless the idea is to lie about how much total memory is available so that programs don't request too much in advance and you can "overcommit" them later if they need it I seem to recall such a trick being used elsewhere - maybe Windows? where apps wouldn't try to allocate more than they needed if the system lied about how much was available? - Urias
