[haiku-development] Re: Notification Server?

Hi Stephan,

2007/5/24, Stephan Assmus <superstippi@xxxxxx>:
One problem in your argumentation which I can still see, is that the lack of
the unified notification system, which encourages the developers to find
their own solutions, does not say anything about what particular solution
they eventually come up with, and if it would satisfy your/our expectations.

That's completely true. But the honest truth is that when you browse
BeBits, there's a lot of crap out there. There are loads of
applications that don't conform to any conventions, that just look or
work crappy. Implementing a unified notification system will not
change that there sometimes are coders out there that still have to
learn some things. Some ideas will be invented that will be good,
better than the shortcut to push everything through the notification
system. Some might even be reusable. I think it's a better idea to
take every problem we wanted to solve with this system at a time,
think of an appropriate solution.

Who knows, we might come up with an even better unified system.

I mean to say: Yes, having the system in place might encourage to misuse it.
But the other way around... having it not in place, is no gurantee that the
individual alternative solution which people come up with, will be
satisfactory.

No. Hence the crap on BeBits. However, having good examples in our
base system (e-mail, calender, USB messages, etc.) can guide people to
have proper ideas. Based on our own experiences of designing a
communication system with the user, we can have some ideas in the HIG
guidelines, and guide the 3rd party developers in coming up with a
communication solution based on their needs.

I'm sure this is not what you claimed, but I hope you see how
it weakens your argument somewhat. This is not to say that you shouldn't feel
more than welcome to implement all these individual notifications like you
proposed... :-)

I'm more than willing to think with the coders on these notifications.
And you know, perhaps there will be a few applications that will
benefit from notification popups. But I would consider that a solution
for those applications only, not a reason to beforehand design and
implement a complete full features all capabilities system, because it
will only open up for abuse.

Kind regards,

Niels
