I suppose the engine is already revved up on this but I'm wondering if all this isn't contrary to one of Haiku's leading guidelines: to be "free of any unnecessary complexities".
I'm surprised no one has brought this up earlier, since I was kind of asking this in my original email. Are notifications a complexity? Maybe if done badly or overused. Can they be useful? I think so. I feel this is the kind of feature that is best provided by the OS, instead of having a various incompatible 3rd party alternatives. Though Axel and Stephan have suggested a few more features (notification categories and priorities, which maybe could be combined), in general this is a simple idea, and can be elegantly implemented in a "Be" way.
Do we really want this?
I say yes.
For what purpose?
To provide a system-wide system for sending notifications to the user of various events that they are interested in, or none if they so choose. Ryan
