Welcome, Kyle!
If you haven't done that yet, following Ryan's suggestion to set up a build
environment is definitely a good first step.
Regarding a task, we have a lot of open tasks in virtually all areas. But
rather than just assigning you one, which you may not like, it would help to
know, whether you have interests in particular operating system parts. If you
want to learn more about how the system interacts with hardware devices, you
could get your hands dirty writing (or porting) a driver. If you're curious
about virtual memory management, we have would be glad to have someone to
review the VM code and tackle a few tasks (e.g. a page scanner). There're are
plenty of other kernel areas where a helping hand would be appreciated, but
we're not lacking userland tasks either. E.g. if you find graphical layout
management intriguing, I could serve with a job I don't really get to do and
wouldn't mind giving to someone else. Lots of our open userland tasks are
about fixing bugs and adding some missing features -- there's a great variety
of those, though.
So, do you have areas you would be particularly interested in (or ones you
wouldn't like to touch)?
CU, Ingo
