The first step in working on Haiku is downloading the source, getting
it built, and running your built Haiku image (usually in a virtual
machine like VMWare or QEMU.) This will get you going and allow you to
play with the system and get a feel for it.
I'm not sure if you have an older machine which can run BeOS, but
there is another option that quite a few of we Haiku developers are
using now: building and testing Haiku on Linux.
In fact I recently joined this group when I bought a new Dell with
Ubuntu Linux. In addition I *just* wrote a step-by-step "how to" on
the Haiku web-site that details how to get Haiku building on Ubuntu:
http://haiku-os.org/documents/dev/building_haiku_on_ubuntu_linux_step_by_step
In addition please read our Getting Started guide (though maybe you
already have since you are emailing here :) )
http://haiku-os.org/documents/dev/haiku_development_getting_started
Test the system and if you find a bug, see if you can fix it. If you
get it fixed, make sure you code follows our coding guidelines
(http://haiku-os.org/documents/dev/haiku_coding_guidelines), and then
follow the procedure for creating a patch
(http://haiku-os.org/development/faq#patches .)
I would recommend starting on something simple like a preference
application which is not properly sensitive to font size changes (use
the Font preferences to change the font size.) Actually if you run at
font size 18 there are a lot of these :)
Good luck and welcome aboard,
Ryan
