At least it wasn't just me.  It sounded like it would be interesting,
but after doing much as Ryan described it wouldn't work for me either,
and it left my ubuntu in an unstable state afterwards.  This was a
couple months ago.
I've since removed it, an recent update to 8.04 seems to have fixed
things for now.
I think we will see a Haiku-based media center someday.  I could see
that being one place were a company might come in and make use of this
OS and then install it onto custom set-top boxes.
