FWIW, I can record with my HDA chipset of my notebook (some 6 year old 
noname core2duo you never heard of and whose manufacturer folded a few 
years ago...).

I don't have an external mic to connect to input, but the internal mic 
produces nice sounds in SoundRecorder when I scratch on the notebook's 
surface. The Media pref's HDA panel shows only one "Input" slider, BTW.
