The goal of bootman, like the original BeOS version, is to be installed anywhere, that is, to fit into the 512 bytes (a little more actually, atleast the BeOS used part of the 2nd sector) of the MBR. Grub's complex shell and graphical splash means it needs many more sectors, which are not always available. This means it must be installed from the start. François.
