Well, go for it! :-)
We will decide what applications are accepted only after the deadline
has expired, anyway.

There is nothing wrong with having more than a single application (so
you could apply for different projects). In such an application, it's
always nice to know why you feel motivated to work on such a task, and
why you are confident to be able to complete it in time. If you haven't
investigated any time in the subject yet, it probably won't sound that
convincing.
It also doesn't hurt if we receive more than one application for the
same project.
