Personally I'd like to see this revisited for R2 in a future GSOC

Does stippi still intend on working with the deskbar code? I've been
dealing with a fire in my business for the last year, so I haven't had time
to do much of any rewriting.
Seems to be the only thing I have a lot of interest in working with, just
no time.
