remove the directory it's contained in (say like when you're doing a build
and having to delete the mime database) the directory won't delete and so
the mime database isn't updated ... hey presto, nothing looks right any
more.
The UFM is closely related to the Unreproducible Fault of Mystery, also
known as a UFM. Anyone mentioning they have seen one of these is immediately
ridiculed and scorned, like people who see UFO's.
So whatever you do, if you see this happen, don't mention it.

Didn't U2 record a song about this phenomena? I believe it is called
"The Undeletable File".
You catch on quickly. Yeah, U2 had an album by that name...
