Yes using gradients somewhere and plain look everything else is bad.
You don't want to look like Zeta do you ? :p

But what I would see in Haiku is a completely skinnable UI via plugins, pretty much how it does with the windows' decor. I would love to have a black look like this by Justin McCormack:

Definitively not for R1, I guess :-)
But for R1, we have to (at least) give a little revamp to the whole GUI. The current one looks too oldish... and that InvertRect :-S 
I'll leave it as is for now (even R5 does this) until we discuss it further.
