That's something which should really be done on a cross-platform level
to lower the acceptance level of such things.

This is something that should really be done with FreeDesktop.org as
much as possible. They already have some RFC about how to archive
metadata to a file.

Note there are some other attribute-maintaining archiving tools around
(like star which is an alternate tar, but it works with POSIX xattrs).
