I actually do have a vision: keep them free to use for user defined actions, 
a.k.a. SpicyKeys. That does not collide with having F2 as an actual rename 
shortcut, though, as that is indeed optional.
Basically, providing that shortcut by default is the pragmatic approach vs. the 
purist approach. While I usually prefer the latter, I think it's acceptable to 
be pragmatic here and there, too. It will only affect a minority of users, 
anyway, at least when I enter the rename mode via F2 on Windows on someone 
else's computer that someone usually asks "how did you do that?".
