Note: you'll only see the new button when you *don't* "automatically mark mail as read" in the preferences. I open a new message. Moving to the next with "Next" leaves it with status "Seen". Coming back to it, I can either keep it as "Seen" with the "Next" button, or mark it "Read" with the "Read" button. Opening a "Read" mail, I can now get it back to "Seen" with the "Unread" button. Sounds more complicated than it is when you're actually using it.
