The latter part is the most interesting question here. Some BIOSes are a
bit more picky about the structure of devices they'll boot from, so it may
be a case of it rejecting e.g. a partition without a proper MBR. If that's
the case, and the image being written to the usb stick is raw, then trying
anyboot instead may indeed deal with it here.
