I started clean, did an hda driver "mod" from scratch and sure enough, it
works without using VID_SET_CONVERTER_CHANNEL_COUNT at all, just as well
as the old driver modification did.

Try to keep in mind that there are many audio cards which support lots of
inputs and outputs, any exspansion of routing etc, really should be made
available through the media server and the prefrences panel so that any
and all applications future or past can make use of these changes.
