I created an install of Lubuntu 11.04 on an 8Gb USB thumb drive, and did a
complete build of the latest revision of Haiku from there and put it onto
a 2Gb USB thumb drive. Upon booting from that drive, it appears Haiku now
sees my internal Ethernet port (plus our Linksys wireless router, but
refuses to use it (WPA2, I assume)). So, in summary, I believe this "bug"
has been satisfactorily resolved.
