 I shut down via that power off item all the time and I haven't had any
 issues on either of my Haiku partitions (and they see a considerable
 amount of filesystem activity since they're often doing full OS builds).
 One possibility that comes to mind is that there are some hard disks out
 there which lie about when they've completed operations in order to look
 better on benchmarks, but those are thankfully uncommon.
