I have no problem donating the necessary components for an auto
leveling solution for the MendelMax. The major time investment for the
upgrade is going to be flipping the X axis vertically to accommodate
features like auto leveling. This affects the X carriage mounts as well and
will involve printing new parts customized for our 10mm smooth rod. We can
certainly use the features of the prusa MK2 as the final solution. Once we
go that route, the spacing between threaded and smooth rods on the Z axis
are now incompatible. So, Chris and I will propose a path forward that is
the least impact on the printer downtime.
In all honesty, A faster solution would most likely be the assembly of
the components that Gabe left for a Prusa i3 style printer. We could even
print the latest Prusa i3 I MK2 components to incorporate the benefits of
E3D all metal hot end with auto leveling probe.

these items and they’re not that bad normally, so if you guys come across a

The MendelMax is printing again. It seems to be quite finicky regarding
the z-height and extrusion. Too close to the bed and it strips the
filament, too far and it doesn’t adhere and turns into a pile of goo. If we
were to upgrade the extruder and incorporate one of the newer auto-bed
leveling techniques it would probably give that printer a new lease on life
and make it easier to use.
