Thanks Dave -- I have added this one to my favorites. I read some of it and it is informative. There is also a good registry discussion on www.vernalex.comm, along with a bunch of other topics -- just follow the "Guides" link and you will get a pretty good set of tutorials on Windows and troubleshooting.
But as for my own difficulties, I have another question:

I looked at the firewall settings on my machine, and there is a list of "exceptions" of sites that can connect to my computer. These include things like the instant messengers and some windows stuff such as remote login or something to remotely access my computer.
The weierd thing is that before I installed the "registry mechanic" software, there were 5 items in the exceptions list, but now there are 6. I don't understand what the meaning of the entries is -- I turened off remote desktop and remote login, but there is one called Microsoft manage console that I have never seen before. Does anyone know what it does or why someone would put it in the list?
It is kind of creepy. Did I inadvertently grant complete access to my computer by anyone?
HELP!
It hasn't solved the problem. I think I'll get my money back on this program.
I downloaded the trial version, but in case anyone else wants to download it, I installed it and the only thing it did when I clicked on "scan" was to report all the things that needed to be removed or repaired, but the repair operations were only available if you ppurchased and registered the product...
So I did but it was not effective in removing the stuff I wanted removed, and it introduced some other things that I don't want, and also unregistered some drivers that should be registered...
Yuck.
Any additional info is welcome!
Thanks in advance!

le and all,

You might find this link helpfull in dealing with the registry. Although
there are a number of tools that deal with the registry, it can be difficult
to use them since they may need a lot of help from you to determine what
should be kept and what should be thrown away.

Subject: [guispeak] windows XP questions

Hi all --
I've been tearing my hair out trying to figure out how to tweak my system to
fix the bugs, and also how to setup my new XP pro system. I've already
posted some of the XP pro problems, but I have another question about my XP
home machine that I'm experimenting with to get rid of the stupid restarts.

First, I downloaded and purchased a tool called register mechanic from
pctools.com and have installed and run it, but it didn't clean out the
stupid Quicken files but deleted a bunch of other things that my system
complained about when I rebooted.
Has anyone else used this tool? and how can I clean my registry?
Also, what is the "Microsoft console manager"? I had a window pop up saying
that it had tried to connect to my computer but was rejected by the
firewall. So I went to the firewall settings on the control panel and it
was indeed not blocked. I don't understand why I got that message.
Since this registry cleaner is guaranteed for 30 days and I get free updates
for a year, I wonder what I should report, as I don't understand the reason
or meaning of some of the problems...

Could someone familiar with the registry please send me mail privately so I
can try and solve this problem?
Sorry for the vague questions, but my understanding of this area is vague,
so that is why I bought a registry cleaner rather than try to clean the
registry myself.
Thanks in advance!
