Did you try the narrator that comes with Windows?
It does a rather poor job, but does read text. I don't know about files in Word however, as they are a bit beyond text -- but if it is a mostly text document, and if narrator works on the screen image rather than the source, then it would be fine.
To run narrator you do something like go to the run menu and type "narrator"
Then read the help.
Good luck

Subject: [guispeak] text to speech with word files

I received a request for a lead to a "free" program that would read word files aloud
in a fairly decent voice. The request was for proof reading purposes, to see how the
file sounded, and not for general screen reading purposes. Can anyone suggest such a
program? I told the person of text aloud which, though not free, did seem to fit the
bill. Any other suggestions?
