Hi Laura.  Here on my Debian Linux system the fortune files are in 
/usr/share/games/fortunes.  You can of course make your own fortunes as 
well and just have the fortune program use those instead.  I've 
sometimes had to modify the picked fortune for an email because it may 
have been a little past the offensive line.  In fact, some have been 
offended by some of my fortunes thinking I meant them for them 
personally but I can assure you, they are totally random.
