It has limitations though and if you have a scanner and an ocr package such as omni page and some others, including kursweil 1,000 and openbook, you can also "extract" the text from a pdf file. Also, a word about drm if I may. Publishers at least here in this country have a "right" to publish information in locked form. A lot of people who did not do this have been severely burned but I believe the technology is becoming mature and that there are or soon will be ways to provide drm for print materials that will also make it possible to specially access that information. Adobe with v7 have worked quite hard on providing as much of this capability as possibility while at the same time, allowing publishers who have a need to who purchase and use their creation tools to provide protection for their content. The battle between security and access to content is a complex one and no one in their right mind wants to turn people out but there are busines decisions that must be made. Some of the decisions were made quite some time ago and cannot be easily changed. Many publishers are still using tools other than those adobe markets to create their goods and adobe has no controll over tools other than their own. I did not read the ebook article, but I've been following these issues for quite some time now and although I am dismayed that we can't have access to everything we should be able to have access to, When documents are accessible and you are using the right combination of equipment, things are getting much better. What we need to do is be as much a part of the solution as we can. Whilst Adobe still allow content publishers to disallow content extraction by access technology, meaning screen readers won't be able to read books that have had this option disallowed, more publishers are allowing it. I downloaded about three books published by John Wiley and son. All these had content extraction by access technology allowed, which was something Wiley turned off in their e-books only six or so months ago. So, it looks like Wiley books are now accessible, as well as those from some smaller publishers. Whilst persuading publishers to allow access is a difficult task, and one Adobe should have taken the lead on by not allowing them to disable content extraction by access technology, it does seem as some of the big publishers are now gaining social consciences.
